Tyler Griffiths, 22, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire was jailed for three years for armed robbery at Bradford Crown Court
A former soldier was identified as a knife-wielding robber after being recognised by his distinctive tattoos in CCTV footage of the raid.
Dim-witted Tyler Griffiths, 22, slipped up when he didn't cover his hands while rummaging through the till during a terrifying armed robbery in February this year.
A court heard, that Griffiths had built up a cocaine drug debt after leaving the army after serving for four years.
Prosecutor Phillip Adams said Griffiths was wearing a balaclava over his face and carrying a kitchen knife when he went into a mini-market in Halifax, West Yorks.
A female shop assistant was working in the store alone and CCTV footage captured her jumping up from her seat and retreating behind the counter area.
