The Centers for Disease Control issued a stern warning against washing raw chicken and other meat, explaining that it can spread germs in the kitchen

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has sparked a debate among cooks after it advised consumers to stop washing raw chicken before cooking it.  

A tweet on April 26 received more than  1,000 comments and 1,600 retweets with people debating whether to follow the advice of the health agency.

'Don't wash your raw chicken! Washing can spread germs from the chicken to other food or utensils in the kitchen,' the first tweet read.

Then came a follow-up message after much debate.

'We didn't mean to get you all hot about not washing your chicken!' the agency tweeted three days later on April 29. 'But it's true: kill germs by cooking chicken thoroughly, not washing it.
