The first photographs have emerged of a three-year-old girl who died inside a burning car with its doors chained shut. Zoey Pereira was found in the backseat of a blazing Audi A6 sedan in Queens, New York just before 9pm on Sunday. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died from her injuries. Authorities say Zoey's father Martin Pereira, 39, hid from the cops a few hundred feet from where his daughter burned alive near Baisley Park Pond. A police source told the New York Post: 'The only reason [officers] found him was that a piece of his clothing was on fire. He was stripped down to his underwear.' Pereira was treated for second- and third-degree burns before being taken into custody. He has not yet been charged in Zoey's death, which was ruled a homicide on Monday. He had previously posted several photos of himself with Zoey alone and with her mother. Investigators believe Pereira was in the middle of a contentious custody dispute with Zoey's mother and was supposed to return the girl to her mom on the night of her murder. The mother, whose name has not been released, called 911 in a panic to report her missing around the same time that she was killed. Two of Zoey's aunts decried her death while standing outside of the mother's home on Monday. 'He did that to her. That's not even human, that's an animal,' one of the aunts said, according to the Post. The other added: 'Hopefully he dies. I'm just being honest. I hope he dies.' Officials believe Pereira was in the middle of a contentious custody dispute with Zoey's mother Police responding to reports of a car in the middle of the street by Baisley Boulevard and 155th Street found that the Audi's back doors had been chained shut. One gas canister was found in the backseat of the car and another was discovered nearby in the street. Heat from the blaze melted the handle, which allowed firefighters to open the door and grab the girl. That's when the man in the front seat, who had been driving erratically beforehand, sprinted out of the car. 'This guy was fully engulfed in flames,' one witness told the New York Daily News. 'I heard a boom, like something explode. When I came out, I saw smoke,' added witness Lisa Silvera. Silvera said someone directed the man to run to nearby Baisley Pond Park. 'She told him to run, run to the water,' she said. The man jumped into the pond. Officers found him there and took him into custody. 'He was on a stretcher,' Silvera said 'He's burned. He looked white. So burned. With a mask on his face.' Heat from the blaze melted the door handle, which allowed firefighters to open the door and grab the girl.
