Motorists caught driving past emergency vehicles with flashing lights and failing to slow down could be fined $282 as police announce a crackdown on the little known road law.

Officers attending accidents on Victorian roads will be out in full force with radar guns ready to catch drivers who don't slow down to 40km/h.

The law was introduced in July 2017 and states that all drivers must slow down when passing stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights.

The same law was introduced in New South Wales in September 2018 and has already faced calls to be scrapped over claims it causes more accidents than it prevents as drivers slam on the brakes on high-speed roads.
