Pensioner who admitted to robbing banks in the 1970s is hit with more charges

A 69-year-old pensioner who admitted to committing a string of bank robberies in the 1970s has been hit with a new charge.

Ross Oliver McCarty, of Edgecliff, has been accused of robbing another bank in Sydney's central business district in May 1977, police allege.

The elderly man was arrested in December after he was alleged to have stolen cash from eight different banks between 1977 and 1978.

The court had heard he made off with a total of more than $11,000 in his heists.

McCarty is currently on conditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Central Local Court on Tuesday.

Waverley Local Court previously heard McCarty committed the robberies while he was a 'full-blown alcoholic' and that most of the crimes occurred in the afternoon following lunchtime drinking binges.

McCarty's wife of 47 years and her sister, who attended the court hearing at the time, were in deep shock, Legal Aid solicitor Mark Klees said.

'They obviously had no idea about these matters,' he said.

'This is a very unusual matter. It's a very old matter.'

Police alleged McCarty, who was in his late 20s at the time of the robberies, handed tellers notes that warned he had a gun and demanded they hand over money in small denominations.

McCarty was only caught after his fingerprints were taken when he was charged with fraud in 2010 and later matched to the archived notes found at the crime scenes.

His alleged crimes occurred so long ago that only one of the banks he is accused of robbing still exists.

In applying for bail for his client Mr Klees said McCarty had given up alcohol 30 years ago and had worked as a self-taught bookkeeper.
