Country home where Lewis Carroll met real-life Alice is on the market for £1.3m

A country home which is said to have inspired Lewis Carroll to have penned Alice in Wonderland is up for sale for a staggering £1.3million.

Liddell House had been the childhood home of Alice Liddell, the real life foundation of Carroll's famous character.

The property near Cirencester in Gloucestershire is a grade II listed building and is understood to date back to the 18th century.

It is thought the writer, who was a personal friend of Alice's father Henry, visited the property before writing his now iconic novel.

There is even a small door in the entrance hall of the six bed house that said to be that referred to in the classic tale.

In chapter two of the children's classic, Alice finds herself in a hall with many doors, and doesn't have the correct key to unlock them. She then comes across a tiny door and the book describes how glad she was when she found the key would fit.

An extract reads: 'So she unlocked the tiny little door, and she stooped down and looked through it, and what do you think she saw? Oh, such a beautiful garden! And she did so long to go into it! But the door was far too small. She couldn’t squeeze herself through, any more than you could squeeze yourself into a mouse-hole!'

The story of the home's unique heritage has been passed through the generations and is now a well-known tale in the community.

The current owners have lived in the property for nearly 30 years but have now decided the time is right to move elsewhere.

It is to be sold by estate agents Savills who have described it as 'a great family house' and the agents say they have already been taking interest.
