Shocking dashcam footage shows motorist running over policewoman

This is the terrifying moment a policewoman narrowly avoids being crushed against a metal fence by a hit-and-run driver who reversed over her in a stolen car.

James Turner, 56, knocked PC Amy Macaulay to the ground in a Nissan Juke Acenta after being stopped by a police car in Ipswich.

PC Macaulay, who had tried to confront Turner by opening the passenger door, was left in agony when her leg became trapped under a wheel.

Turner, who had been pulled over for having stolen number plates, then fled the scene by driving down the wrong side of the road, ripping off the Nissan's front bumper in the process.

He has since admitted a number of vehicle offences and assault causing actual bodily harm and was jailed for two years at Ipswich Crown Court.

PC Macaulay was able to get to her feet afterwards and return to her vehicle so they could pursue the offender.

She believes her 'sturdy' police boot protected her from serious injury, although she needed a month off to recover from bruising to the bones in her lower leg and foot.

Doctors told her that she could easily have broken her ankle and been left permanently disabled if it were not for the protection of her police issue boot.

Turner's car was found smashed up and abandoned minutes later and he was arrested the next day.

He admitted four charges of aggravated vehicle taking, three of driving while disqualified and assault causing actual bodily harm.

Turner was jailed for two years at Ipswich Crown Court and banned from driving for four years soon after PC Macaulay returned to duty.

The horrific incident happened on March 21 after she and her colleague tried to stop the Nissan which was believed to have false or stolen number plates.

The pair pulled up in front of the car at traffic lights in London Road, Ipswich, and PC Macaulay jumped out to open the driver's door.

Turner, of Ipswich, suddenly accelerated forward without warning and collided with the back of the police car.

He slammed his car into reverse, dragging Pc Macaulay backwards until she fell under the front wheel.

Turner then drove back into the police car and reversed again - crushing her right leg and driving over her feet.
