PC Laura Lawson, whose father plays Jim McDonald in the soap, 'lost it' when she and four other officers were called to an out of control house party in Warwickshire. She kicked Alex Burkill, 17, when he was forced to the ground but was restrained by colleagues and later reported to senior officers. The 31-year-old admitted common assault and quit after eight years with West Mercia Police. Last October Lawson, from Kenilworth in Warwickshire, was handed a three-month sentence, suspended for 12 months, subjected to a curfew and ordered to pay £1,200. Despite quitting the force she was found guilty of gross misconduct at a special case hearing on Tuesday. She was told that if she had not resigned she would have been sacked. The panel also said Lawson will be placed on the College of Policing barred list. The 31-year-old's father Charlie Lawson has played Jim McDonald in Coronation Street since 1989 Head of Professional Standards, Superintendent Helena Bennett, told the hearing: 'A serving police officer receiving a criminal conviction for assault brings discredit on the force and is completely unacceptable when we are responsible for protecting the public from harm. 'Lawson's actions amounted to a breach of the standards of professional behaviour we expect from officers, and were entirely inappropriate.' The attack happened in the early hours of April 16 last year outside an address in Rugby, Warwickshire. Worcester Crown Court heard Lawson attacked Mr Burkill, now 18, called him a 'd*** head' and threatened to use pepper spray on him. Mr Lawson on the long-running soap with his co-star, Beverley Callard (Liz MacDonald) Judge Robert Juckes QC said: 'You ended up kicking the head of one of them. 'As a police officer you are trained not you give way to provocation. It was a reported assault at the time that you kicked him. He was vulnerable as he was being restrained. 'The offence crosses the custody threshold. You have lost a career that had meant so much to you, that loss is a real punishment.' Just weeks before her court appearance, her father Charlie, 59, was pulled off stage after suffering a mini-stroke during a play. Speaking after he recovered, Mr Lawson said a 'culmination of things' had happened in the run up to the stroke.
