A badly decomposed body was found in the basement of a Brooklyn apartment building after being there for weeks.

Police received a 911 call about an unconscious man in the basement at 25 Joralemon Street just before 10 am on Wednesday.

They found the adult male unconscious and unresponsive when they arrived at the scene.

The man, who is believed to have been homeless, was pronounced dead and police are working to identify him through a tattoo on his neck, sources told the New York Post. 

The body, which was found in a basement water catchment, was so badly decomposed that authorities couldn’t immediately identify any signs of trauma. 

One resident told the New York Post: 'We went searching. There is a big pool of water down there
