How Bill Shorten surrounds himself with wife Chloe, Kristina Keneally, Tanya ...

Bill Shorten is pulling out all the stops to ensure he becomes the next Australian Prime Minister - including making wife Chloe a prominent part of his campaign.

And Mrs Shorten is not the only woman to have a starring role during the Opposition Leader's public appearances.

He has also been joined on stage at campaign rallies by Labor deputy leader Tanya Plibersek, Senator Kristina Keneally and Senator Penny Wong as he seeks to lock up the female vote.

The public display of inclusiveness and diversity is also a jab at the Liberal Party, who have been criticised for having a gender imbalance.

'The Liberal party does have a women's problem in the sense that we do not have enough women in parliament. And it is one that the party is acutely aware of,' former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull said in March.

Mrs Shorten, Ms Wong and Ms Plibersek all spoke at the official Labor campaign launch in Brisbane in May.

'Let me talk about the one who I love - caring, smart, funny, gentle, he is a wonderful dad, a terrible dancer, and a very proud bulldog owner,' Mrs Shorten told supporters.

Ms Wong said Mr Shorten 'really values strong women, he really values smart women'.

Mr Shorten's glamorous wife Chloe, the daughter of former governor-general Dame Quentin Bryce, is seen as a softer antidote to her husband's harder image as a former union leader.

The 47-year-old feminist is a passionate ambassador for equal opportunity and women and children's health, and an advocate against family violence.

After school she worked as a journalist at the Sunday Mail in Brisbane and later wrote for Australian Consolidated Press magazines including Cleo.

She then moved into corporate communications where she practiced in-house for large organisations in the resources and technology sectors for more than 20 years.

Mrs Shorten first met Mr Shorten professionally in 2007 when she was working in corporate relations and he was the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children's Services.

The Shortens have long been settled in Melbourne's Moonee Ponds where they live with her children Rupert, 17, and Georgette (known as Gigi), 16, and their daughter Clementine, 9.
