Domain analyst Eliza Owen said: 'While these suburbs have more industrial sites and are further from the picturesque, gentrified areas of Battery Point and Sandy Bay, they still offer remarkable proximity to the Hobart CBD and the waterfront, as well as quality established housing relative to what other capital cities can offer for this price point. To find a suburb with a median house price less than $600,000 in Melbourne, buyers have to venture 20km from the CBD while in Sydney that figure is 30km. This data set highlights the differences to commute times and conveniences in each capital,' Ms Owen said. 'It is important for setting expectations… it may be realistic to live close to the CBD in one capital, but not in another. Buyers need to weigh up the trade-offs of location versus lifestyle wherever they are house-hunting.' In Sydney the cheapest suburbs within 10km of the CBD were mostly in the west - and still cost more than $1million. Ms Owen said that these suburbs of Petersham, Leichhardt and Marrickville were cheaper because of the noise from planes taking off and landing at Sydney Airport.
