Labor's incoming leader Anthony Albanese featured more social media images of himself with rugby league greats than Bill Shorten during the election campaign.

The party's Left-faction stalwart will be confirmed as the next Opposition Leader this week after Labor lost the so-called 'unloseable' election on Saturday night.

Mr Shorten was virtually absent from Mr Albanese's social media feeds - with the new leader posting only a single image with the Victorian during the election campaign.

Mr Albanese has only posted two more photos of Mr Shorten this year on his very active account, which has published than 1200 Instagram photos.  

Fellow Left-faction Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek featured six images of Mr Shorten in the six weeks since election campaigning began.  

But on infrastructure spokesman Mr Albanese's Instagram page, rugby league greats turned up more often than Mr Shorten, at least during the election campaign, with State of Origin star and former Rabbitohs centre Greg Inglis appearing on
