A brave teenager has relived the moment he woke up with his bed on fire in the early hours of Friday morning. Ty Smith, from Fawdon, Newcastle, woke in the early hours to find the duvet wrapped around his right arm ablaze. The panicked sixteen-year-old quickly hurled the duvet to one side and fled the rising inferno in his bedroom. Within minutes, Ty and parents Tony and Sam Smith escaped the family home as firefighters arrived to contain the flames which scorched the bathroom and bust the windows. Ty said: 'I woke up with the quilt wrapped around my arm on fire, so I slung it off my arm and wafted it a bit. 'It just set my room completely ablaze. I ran and got my mam and dad and got us out the house before it burnt to the ground. 'It's ruined everything. It's ruined my PS4, my computer, I've got nowhere to stay. 'It ate my house inside out.' It's a good bunch of people who seem to help each other out. 'Firefighters were really quick, and they put us on oxygen. It could have been a lot worse.'
