Heavy rain and winds lashed Sydney and Melbourne on Monday morning as wintry weather swept over the nation - and the worst is yet to come.

A severe weather warning was issued in Sydney where winds of 90kmh are battering the coast, bringing 5m waves.

The conditions are so bleak the government is warning of erosion and damage along Sydney's south coast as far as Woollongong from late Monday.

The outlook is also grim in Melbourne where the Bureau of Meteorology predicted a 100 per cent chance of rain on Monday morning with a chance of hail and thunder.

Commuters have been to take care as they make their way to work amid 50kmh winds.

Meanwhile, a combination of gale force winds and snowfalls may lead to blizzard conditions across Alpine areas from Monday evening into Tuesday morning, bringing winds of 120kmh.
