If you're caught using your phone during a double demerit period, you'll be hit with a fine and up to 10 demerits. Double demerit is a strategy introduced more than 20 years ago in NSW and the ACT in an effort to bring down numbers of roads accidents which tend to spike during holiday weekends. In other states the same system does not apply - Queensland uses double demerit points for repeat offences and Victoria does not have double demerit points.
