Ford is to announce the closure of its Bridgend engine plant today, it has been reported.  

Around 1,500 people are employed at the South Wales site and could now face losing their jobs should the proposal go ahead.  

Union leaders have been called to a meeting with Ford bosses today amid reports of the closure. Reports suggest company officials have flown from the United States to make the announcement. 

Ford has refused to comment on the speculation.

Trade unions however, have expressed shock at the expected announcement.

A Unite spokesperson said: 'Unite will be meeting Ford first thing [this morning] and will comment further once the details of any announcement are known.
