Students at an exclusive Brisbane school have been banned from driving their schoolmates to and from class or leaving their cars in a free council car park. 

St Joseph's College in Spring Hill, which charges boarding students over $45,000 a year, sent a letter to parents and students explaining the new rules last month. 

P-plate students who want to give their friend a lift must get written permission from their parents and the driver's parents on a school-issued form.

The letter, obtained by the Courier Mail, sent by Acting Dean of Students Damien Cuddihy said students would be given a weekend detention for breaking the rules.
