A heavily-tattooed shirtless man has been arrested after allegedly breaking into a family's home and barricading himself in one of the rooms.

The man, who was covered in blood, allegedly smashed his way into the Balmain home in Sydney's affluent inner west around 3.30am and began screaming for help.

Father Edward Madden, who was visiting from Hong Kong with his wife, one-year-old daughter and parents, said he was awoken after hearing the front door window smash.
