Joe Biden paid tribute to his friendship with former President Barack Obama by tweeting a bizarre picture of a bracelet with both of their names on.

Biden tweeted the photo showing a friendship bracelet on 'Best Friends Day' Saturday with the caption: 'Happy #BestFriendsDay to my friend, @BarackObama.'

The Presidential candidate, however, was widely mocked for the post.

Many commentators accused Biden of a thinly veiled attempt at self-promotion by attempting to associate himself with Obama.

David Axelrod, Obama's former senior adviser, responded to the tweet, saying, 'This is a joke, right?' Bill Kristol responded to Axelrod, 'Fraid not.'

Biden became an unlikely social media darling towards the end of Obama's presidency - featuring in a number of memes making light of his friendship with the former President.

After Donald Trump's election victory, Twitter turned to funny memes imagining Vice President Joe Biden's last laugh at the White House.

The memes swept social media, imagining Biden coming up with ploys to prank the incoming president, as well as poking fun at Biden and President Barack Obama's so-called 'bromance'.
