Jeremy Hunt's wife Lucia is all smiles as he pitches to become PM

Previously referred to as 'Jeremy Hunt's secret weapon' Lucia Hunt watched on, all smiles today, as her husband, Britain's Foreign secretary launched his bid to become the leader of the conservative party.

On the deadline for candidates to announce their intentions to become party leader Mr Hunt launched his campaign at a slick conference in Westminster London today.

The Foreign Secretary has used the run up to the Tory leadership campaign to make a mark on the international scene - travelling the continent with his wife front and centre.

The official tour through Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Kenya last month was ostensibly to promote British interests with Mr Hunt speaking on issues including press freedom and security co-operation.

But the trip saw another use as Lucia Hunt, his wife and the mother of their three children - Jack, Anna and Eleanor - stood by his side carving out a strong personal profile to help him gain the keys to Number 10.

Mrs Hunt, 41, born Lucia Guo in Xian, met the ambitious politician - 11 years her senior -through his education publishing business Hotcourses, which he later sold for £14million.

Who is Lucia Hunt?

 Early Life

Lucia Hunt, formerly Lucia Guo, was born in 1978 in Xian, China - an ancient city in Northern China where her parents still live. She is now a British Citizen having moved to England to pursue her career.

Career

Mrs Hunt was working as a student recruiter at the university of Warwick up to 2008. Little is known about her career prior to this.

Mrs Hunt is now believed to be a full time home maker, however being a politician's wife can be considered a job in itself.

The proceeds of the sale of Hotcourses - £14million - are kept in her name and she is listed as the director of the property portfolio company bought with those profits, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Marriage

Mrs Hunt met the ambitious politician - 11 years her senior - in 2008 through his education publishing business Hotcourses, which he later sold for £14million. She had been working at the University of Warwick, helping to recruit Chinese students to attend university when he decided to give her his email.

It is believed Mr Hunt proposed on a walk near his parent's house in Shere, Surrey.

They married in Xian in 2009 after Jeremy asked Lucia’s father for permission to wed his daughter and the couple married in a traditional Chinese ceremony. Jeremy and Lucia have three children: Jack, Anna and Eleanor.

 Finances and scandal

Wife to Theresa May's richest Cabinet minister Jeremy Hunt, with a personal fortune of £14million - the couple's investments have not come without scrutiny.

In April last year a scandal arose after Lucia and Jeremy Hunt set up a company to buy seven luxury flats without registering the firm with Companies House within the allotted time.

The former Health Secretary was accused of 'illegal activity' by Labour for failing to disclose his stake in the firm to the authorities.

Today Mrs Hunt appeared in a stunning red dress, perhaps paying tribute to her native China, not Japan, as once uttered by Mr Hunt in a gaff during a visit to Beijing to discuss post Brexit-trade.
