A couple were stunned to discover what they thought was a 'rotting strawberry' in a newly-bought and Asda punnet was actually a live toad. Luke Bown, 23, from Barnsley, and his fiancee Leanne Anderson, 35, didn't notice the tiny creature until they unpacked their shopping last week. Footage shows the tiny toad - which the couple thought was a frog - sitting at the bottom of the sealed punnet beneath a mound of juicy Scottish strawberries. Luke Bown, 23, from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, and his fiancee Leanne Anderson were shocked to find a live toad inside their unopened punnet of ASDA strawberries Ms Anderson realised the toad was there when she saw what she thought was the 'rotting strawberry' staring out at her and she shouted for Mr Bown to come and see. The couple said the toad had nibbled on some of the strawberries and they were amazed it had survived the packaging process, time spent on the supermarket shelves and the four-hour trip from Scotland to Barnsley. After telling ASDA about the bizarre find, they returned the toad to the store where they had bought the strawberries and it was later released by staff. In his video, Mr Bown holds up the punnet to the camera and zooms in on the toad, which is just sitting, its throat bulging in and out as it breathes. Mr Bown, who thought the toad was a frog, said: 'I wasn't shocked there was a frog there because you've heard the stories before, but I was shocked it was still alive more than anything. 'It had an eventful trip around the UK from Scotland, ended up in Barnsley of all places, and it happened to myself. Luke Bown, 23, from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, and his fiancee Leanne Anderson were shocked to find a live toad inside their unopened punnet of ASDA strawberries 'I'm relieved it has been released and is okay. 'It would have been sad if it had died.' Mr Bown said Ms Anderson likes 'juicy' strawberries and picked up a punnet without noticing the toad. 'We got home and were unpacking the strawberries,' he said. 'My missus thought it was a manky strawberry at first, until she looked closely and realised it was a frog and it was staring back at her. 'She screamed, "no way, what on earth". Let me out! The toad stands on a strawberry inside the container but can't escape because the punnet is still sealed. Mr Bown was 'amazed' it had survived the trip from Scotland and the packaging process 'I ran into the kitchen and asked what's up, and she shouted, "there's a frog in my strawberries". 'I didn't believe her at first and she said, "I'm being serious". 'It wasn't until I looked for myself that I realised there actually was,' he added. 'My missus turned the tap on and put some water in through the holes because it was a sealed box. 'I left it sealed. I contacted ASDA and they said to bring it back. 'There were a couple of strawberries that had been nibbled. You could tell it had been eating the strawberries. Probably for moisture because it was hot. Speaking of his amazement that the toad had survived, he said: 'From Scotland to Barnsley it's still a four-hour drive, and then obviously it's gone through all the process of packaging. 'How long has it been in the van for? How long had it been on the shelf? 'It had been stuck in that packaging for quite a while until we picked it up,' he added. Once ASDA had confirmed the toad was British - and not a foreign species which could threaten domestic toads - the supermarket released it. Mr Bown, pictured above with Ms Anderson, was relieved the toad was later released by ASDA An Asda spokesperson said: 'All of our fresh fruit and veg is grown naturally so inevitably we get some visitors tagging along for the ride. 'This little guy clearly loved our Scottish strawberries a little too much, but we would like to reassure customers that regular checks are carried out to maintain our quality standards. 'We'd like to thank Mr Bown for returning our little friend and are pleased to confirm he's now hopped off to find a happy new home.'
