The 60-year-old man who was viciously attacked by two thugs outside a Melbourne train station is Victoria's top public transport cop.

Chris O'Neill, Assistant Commissioner of Transit and Public Safety, was rushed to hospital after being kicked and punched in the head and chest near Heyington Railway Station in Toorak around 5.30pm on Saturday.

He remains in hospital where he is being treated for serious head injuries. It is understood he will
