The Hatton Garden burglars are being sent back to jail after they failed to pay back more than £12 million, despite one still owning a flat in Spain and property in London.

John 'Kenny' Collins, 78, was jailed for seven years while Brian Reader, 80, was given six years for their involvement in the infamous £25 million gems raid in 2015.

The duo will now be returned back to jail until they appear at Hendon Magistrates Court on July 17, after the judge said it was important that members of the public see that ‘those who commit crimes do not enjoy the proceeds’.

Collins and Reader were released last year after serving three years of their sentences, but they now face having to serve additional seven year sentences for defaulting on the confiscation orders.

Notorious robber and jewel thief Reader, dubbed the 'guv'nor', was said to have £6,644,951 available in assets but has failed to pay the money back.

He has claimed he did not make a penny from the raid after bailing out before the vaults were breached.

He shares a flat in Spain's Costa del Sol with his wife as well as a council flat in London which he claims he has been unable to sell despite knocking £25,000 of the price.

Of the outstanding money police believe £5.5 million has been stored in hidden assets.

Phillip Stott, prosecuting, told Westminster Magistrates Court: 'The confiscation order was made in January 2018 and it expired a year ago.
