Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer broke his nose during batting practice Tuesday, and his status for his scheduled Wednesday start was uncertain, the team announced.
Scherzer was injured while taking part in a bunting drill. A pitch deflected off his bat and hit him squarely in the face.
The six-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner immediately hunched over in pain and held a towel to his nose as he walked off the field. A CT scan was negative, according to MLB.com, but the team had not yet determined whether he would face the Philadelphia Phillies as scheduled in one of the two games of a Wednesday doubleheader.
It's possible he could be pushed back to start the series finale Thursday. The scheduled Tuesday night game was postponed, so Patrick Corbin, who was due to start Tuesday, likely will pitch one end of the Wednesday twin bill.
Scherzer is 5-5 with a 2.81 ERA in 15 starts this season. He has 136 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings.
