Swimmers were just feet away from sharks at South Carolina's Myrtle Beach on Friday, with one tourist capturing ominous photographs of dark shapes lurking in the surf.

Ginger Gilmer took the photographs from her 15th-floor balcony at a resort in Cherry Grove and uploaded them to Facebook, where they have been shared more than 24,000 times.

One photograph shows a man holding a young toddler standing just feet away from the shark - and its dorsal fin can be seen sticking out of the water.

In another image, another man stands with his back to the shark while a child wades into the sea.
