Retired Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has been moved out of the intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital as he continues his recovery from gunshot wounds.

His wife, Tiffany, made the announcement Saturday in a statement released by the team.

"He remains in good condition and continues to recover under the care of Drs. David King and Larry Ronan," Tiffany Ortiz said.

Ortiz, who retired after the 2016 season, was shot in the back June 9 as he visited a club in his hometown of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He had surgery for internal injuries that evening, then was flown to Boston the following day and underwent a second operation.

Doctors removed his gallbladder and part of his colon and intestines in the initial surgery. Ortiz also sustained liver damage.

The 43-year-old Ortiz was not the intended target of the orchestrated attack, Dominican Republic authorities said Wednesday.

Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez told reporters the actual target was a man sitting with and dressed similarly to Ortiz.

At least 10 people are currently in custody for their alleged involvement in the shooting. A motive for the shooting has not been released.
