Nancy Pelosi said Monday she was able to convince Donald Trump to cancel planned raids on illegal immigrants this weekend by telling him he was scaring children in the U.S.

The House Speaker phoned the president Friday evening and plead for him to call off Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportations and arrests scheduled for Sunday, telling Trump Congress needed more time to work on a solution to address issues at the southern border.

'When I spoke to the president, I said ''Look, I'm a mom, I have five kids, seven, nine grandchildren and children are scared,'' Pelosi said recalled her conversation with Trump during an event in New York hosted by Democratic Congresswoman Grace Meng.

''You're scaring the children of America, not just in those families but their neighbors and their communities. You're scaring the children,'' she said she told him.
