Rapinoe penalties give U.S. 2-1 win over Spain

The United States needed two Megan Rapinoe penalties, one of them controversial, to beat Spain 2-1 on Monday and set up a quarter-final clash with hosts France at the women's World Cup. The winning spot kick was subject to much debate but Rapinoe converted it with 15 minutes left after her opening penalty had been cancelled out by Jennifer Hermoso early in the first half.

Olympics: As Games suitors dwindle, sport still good business, says LA

While another reduced bid process was completed on Monday with Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo winning the 2026 Winter Olympics, the Los Angeles Sport Council (LASC) released a report that said sport, including the Games, is good business. Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo beat out Stockholm-Are for the 2026 hosting rights, after four other bids — Switzerland’s Sion, Japan’s Sapporo, Austria’s Graz and Canada's Calgary in Canada — dropped out with concerns over the size and cost of the event.

Ecuador's draw with Japan send Paraguay into quarters

Japan and Ecuador were eliminated from the Copa America on Monday after their 1-1 draw gifted Paraguay a quarter-final berth as one of the two best third-placed sides. A win for either team would have guaranteed them a place in the last eight and Japan had the better of the early stages and took the lead in 15 minutes when Shoya Nakajima scored from 25 meters out.

NBA awards: Doncic top rookie, Siakam most improved

Luka Doncic, the No. 3 overall selection who was traded to the Dallas Mavericks on draft day in 2018, won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award on Monday night at the league's awards show in Santa Monica, Calif. Doncic received 98 of the 100 votes, with Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks, getting the other two. The third finalist was the top pick in last season's draft, Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton.

Sweden sink Canada to set up Germany clash

Sweden's Stina Blackstenius struck in the second half as they won 1-0 against Canada, who missed a late penalty, at the women's World Cup to set up a quarter-final against Germany. In sweltering conditions at the Parc des Princes, the two teams struggled to register any shots on target in a first half despite Canada dominating possession.

Woods dropped from wrongful death case

A family's wrongful death lawsuit that was filed last month against Tiger Woods, a Florida restaurant named for him, and Woods' girlfriend, Erica Herman, the eatery's general manager, is no longer targeting the star golfer, Woods' attorney said Monday. The other defendants in the case remain. The family of Nicholas Immesberger, 24, a bartender at The Woods in Jupiter, Fla., filed the lawsuit in the wake of his death late last year in a car crash after he had apparently been drinking heavily at the restaurant after his shift ended.

Hawks acquire Turner from Blazers for Bazemore

Evan Turner was dealt from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Atlanta Hawks for Kent Bazemore on Monday in a swap of similar "3-and-D" wing players. Turner is headed to his fifth team in 10 seasons since he was drafted with the second overall pick in the 2010 draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

MLB notebook: Dodgers to extend netting

One day after a fan a Dodger Stadium got hit in the head by a foul ball, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced Monday that they would extend the protective netting further down the foul lines. The Dodgers issued a press release that read, "Fan safety is of the utmost importance to the Dodgers and during the offseason, we began the process of studying how the netting at Dodger Stadium could be configured to provide better protection for our fans. Once this study is completed, the team will implement the recommended changes and extend the netting at Dodger Stadium."

Federer looks to turn number nine Wimbledon dream into reality

Historically, emotionally and statistically, Roger Federer remains the man to beat at Wimbledon even at the 21st time of asking. Forget the creaking knees and advancing years -- the Swiss will be 38 in August -- not many in SW19 will bet against their adopted favorite achieving Wimbledon history with a ninth men's title to equal Martina Navratilova's record singles mark.

The 2028 Summer Games will see host city Los Angeles record a profit of at least $1 billion, mayor Eric Garcetti told a sports summit on Monday. Garcetti said utilizing the city's existing sports venues would keep costs down while ticket and sponsorship sales would top current projections to help Los Angeles avoid the pitfalls that have left some other host cities in debt.
