A former soldier who served with Prince Harry was 'strangled' by a stranger after he looked at him 'the wrong way' - but none of the 20 witnesses stepped in to help him.

James Wharton said he was 'disgusted' he was left to fend for himself - and no-one in the crowd even dialled 999.

He said it happened after he looked at the stranger 'the wrong way' as he walked to work through Birmingham city centre at 9am on Monday June 24.

And Mr Wharton said it was the second time he had been attacked in Birmingham in his 18 months living in the Midlands - having been mugged just once in 11 years while in London.

The 32-year-old served with Prince Harry in Canada but left the forces in 2013 and wrote a book about his experiences, Out in the Army, My Life as a Gay Soldier.

Mr Wharton, who is originally from Wrexham, north Wales, said: 'What is wrong with society? I'm disgusted nobody gave a f***.

'There were easily 20 people in the street all around me. Not one came to help me. Not one.

'Even the window cleaner at one of the shops didn't fuss himself with me being strangled in front of him on the floor.

'I eventually called West Midlands Police - and the man continued to attack me while I was
