June 27 (Reuters) - A Texas police officer turned himself in to authorities after being charged with murder for shooting and killing a driver of a suspected stolen vehicle, according to the prosecutors and local media.
Michael Dunn was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday and charged with murdering Juan Moreno on June 12, the Dallas County District Attorney said in a statement on Thursday.
Dunn, a 13-year veteran of the Farmers Branch police force in Dallas County, Texas, was trying to arrest Moreno in a Dallas parking lot on suspicion he was driving a stolen vehicle and shot him when he started to drive away, local TV station CBS 11 reported, citing police.
Farmers Branch Police Chief David Hale said Dunn had been placed on administrative leave and that the department was conducting its own investigation into Dunn's conduct on June 12.
"Our hearts go out to the Moreno family for their loss. Officer Mike Dunn's life has been forever changed as well," Hale said in a statement on Thursday. "The case will now move forward and be decided in a court of law."
Dunn turned himself in to Seagoville Police Wednesday night and was released shortly afterward on $150,000 bail, CBS 11 reported.
Representatives from the Seagoville police department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
