The American student, 21, killed in a shark attack in the Bahamas was dragged to the shore by her desperate mother who pulled her from the water all by herself as they snorkeled together.

Jordan Lindsey, 21, of Torrance, California was snorkeling near Rose Island in the North Atlantic Ocean waters around 2pm on Wednesday when she was attacked.

Her devastated dad Michael Lindsey told ABC: 'Myself, my two boys, and Jordan's girlfriend, Gianna, were on another part of the island, just swimming on the beach side.

'My wife, Kami, and Jordan went snorkeling on another part of island. My wife was near Jordan, a few feet away, when the shark attacked.

'She said it happened so fast, and no one yelled anything. My wife got to Jordan and pulled Jordan to shore by herself. The medical staff said they still had to do an autopsy. My wife said no one told her there were three sharks.'

She had traveled to the island with her family on a tour boat that brought visitors to the island for snorkeling and to see wild pigs when the sharks appeared.

She suffered devastating injuries in the attack where her right arm was torn off and she suffered bites to her left arm, both legs and buttocks.

The last fatal shark attack in the Bahamas was in 2010 - a global hotspot for sharks - with investigators stating three sharks were involved in killing Lindsey.

Lindsey's parents said they saw the sharks approaching and yelled to warn her but she didn't hear them in time.

She was rushed to the shore and taken to Doctor's Hospital in Nassau, where she was pronounced dead, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said Wednesday.

The shark infested waters of the Bahamas:

The Bahamas are densely populated by sharks and have several shark diving locations where feeding the beasts is common practice.

Tiger sharks, hammerheads, blacktips and bull sharks all navigate the waters which tourists flock to each year.

In the last fatal shark attack in 2010, fishermen discovered a partially decomposed foot inside a tiger shark's mouth.

Once they were on land they cut its belly open to discover a whole corpse.

It was reported to the Royal Bahamian Defense Force Base at Nassau who said they believed the man drowned, although there has been no further information.
