This is the terrifying moment five adult elephants headbutt a car into a ditch and push a second off the road as they attempt to clear their migration route.

Shocking footage shows the 2.7 tonne mammals, which are each twice as heavy as a vehicle, attacking the empty cars at Brys caves in Uttarakhand, northern India, and smashing one of the back windows.

They were parked on the elephants migration route between Rajaji National Park, in the west of the state, and the Tarai area in Nepal.

Shocking footage of Wednesday's attack shows an Asian elephant trumpet and charge out of the woodland at a parked blue car, followed by two others.

They slam into its side and shove it across the road before being joined by two other adults and their calves as they attack a white car.

The enraged animals force it across the road and into a ditch before trumpeting and continuing along their route.

They are joined by another three adult elephants and their calves.

The sound of a car horn and engine revving can be heard in the background as the people filming try to call the elephants away from the vehicles.

A third car can also be seen reversing at the top of the road when it spots the elephants. 

The animals are believed to have been migrating up from the Rajaji National Park to the Tarai area in Nepal, according to a nearby safari camp
