International Trade Secretary Liam Fox is reportedly interested in replacing Sir Kim Darroch as the UK's ambassador to the United States.
The Brexiteer and veteran minister, a fervent transatlanticist, is said to have told friends he is keen on the post after Sir Kim resigned in the wake of the row over leaked cables branding Donald Trump inept.
Any move by the former defence secretary, reported by the Telegraph, would require him to quit his North Somerset seat after almost 30 years.
But it may be appealing as he has backed Boris Johnson's leadership rival Jeremy Hunt and supported Theresa May's Brexit deal and therefore is not guaranteed to keep his trade post if Mr Johnson becomes prime minister.
It came as several of the UK's European allies showed their support for Sir Kim, who quit after being frozen out of diplomatic life in Washington by the president.
Emily Haber, the German ambassador in the US, posted a picture on Twitter showing her with Sir Kim and their French and EU counterparts.
She wrote: 'I’m honored to host my colleagues and friends from the UK, France and the European Union for breakfast at my residence this morning.'
It came as more leaks from official cables were expected to be made public in the coming days.
