A man died while trying to save his 11-year-old daughter after she was washed off a cement break wall and into Lake Michigan's choppy waters.
Authorities said Renee Padilla, 35, of Blue Island, Illinois, had jumped into Lake Michigan and was underwater for about four minutes during the attempted rescue Thursday, according to WGN 9.
The incident was said to have occurred around 2pm, when Padilla's daughter walked out onto the break wall near 31st Street Beach and was knocked into the water by a high wave, according to WTKR.

Witnesses said that they saw lifeguards rush into the water to pull Padilla and the girl, who is said to be his daughter, out of the water.
Padilla was unresponsive when taken out of the water. He was then transported to the hospital in 'extremely critical'
