Jeremy Paxman has launched a stinging personal attack on Boris Johnson, branding the Prime Minister a 'clown' who is 'not as clever as he thinks he is'.

The veteran broadcaster, notorious for mauling interviewees, dubbed the Tory leader a 'charlatan' in a wide-ranging rant against Britain's political class.

During Paxman's 26 years on Newsnight, Mr Johnson was a frequent guest and, while the pair sometimes clashed, they appeared to enjoy a good relationship.

In one show, the then Mayor of London and presenter saddled a tandem bike and rode around the capital.

But the BBC's former interrogator-in-chief has now turned his guns on the new premier in the wake of him taking the reigns of government.
