A whale watching trip has left two people injured after a massive wave hit their boat.

Passengers on board a Spirit of Gold Coast vessel were seen cheering as the boat got closer to a wave on Sunday afternoon.

But the cheerful moments quickly turned to a panic as another massive wave struck the boat seconds later, leaving passengers bracing for impact.

'Oh my God. They have lost hats,' a man, who was sitting inside the cabin, was heard speaking about the people on the outside.

'We have lost people!' a woman responded as water flooded the boat.
