An elderly man who shot his wife dead before turning the gun on himself may have been carrying out a murder-suicide pact.

Bill Feary allegedly killed his sick wife inside their home in Christchurch because the pair didn't want to live without each other.

The grandfather, who was in his early 80s, had been watching his wife Jill's health deteriorate in the months leading up to her death, Stuff reported.

Ms Feary, who was in her late 70s, had been in and out of hospital for a bout of pneumonia and an underlying heart condition.
