A teenager racked up almost $40,000 in medical bills when she was suddenly struck down with a serious illness on a gap year holiday.

Tayla Cutts, 19, saved for five months after graduating high school in Melbourne last year to tour Europe with her best friend.

But after visiting London, Scotland, Paris, and Berlin she began to feel tired and nauseous with a fever and sore throat in the Greek islands.

She saw a doctor on the island of Ios on September 18, where she was diagnosed with a bad case of glandular fever and sent to Athens on a ferry for treatment.

Tayla collapsed on the five-hour boat ride and was rushed to hospital from the pier as her condition rapidly deteriorated.
