The family of a man who was killed in a hit-and-run after a night out at a pub sobbed in court as his killer was acquitted of murder.

Nicholas McEvoy was run over by Michael Allen Meakin on February 21, 2014 after a night of drinking in Plumpton, in Sydney's west.

Meakin, 50, has been in jail since 2016 after he was convicted of murder.

He has always maintained his innocence, claiming he made a drunken mistake in getting behind the wheel but had no intentions of harming Mr McEvoy, who was 30 at the time of his death.
