A sex attacker is on the run after assaulting a woman in a Melbourne park.

The woman was attacked in Mayer Park in Thornbury just after 10.30pm on Saturday night.

Emergency crews received reports of an assault about 11.15pm and rushed to the park, as police and SES officers searched the park for evidence.

According to the Herald Sun, forensic officers were seen investigating around the toilet block located at the park.
