Donald Trump joked in a closed-door fundraising speech to a majority Jewish audience on Tuesday that if his presidency were to end, he could easily move to Israel and become that country's leader.
Trump spoke at an event hosted by the America First Action PAC, spurred on by cheers of 'Four More Years!' and 'USA!' An Orthodox rabbi introduced him.
'We work hard on Israel, I have to tell you. I think I have your approval rating of about 98 per cent,' the president told his audience, in video posted on Twitter.
'In fact, if anything happened here, I'm making a trip over to Israel. I'll be prime minister there very quickly.'
As laughter rolled across a New York City hotel ballroom, Trump poked fun at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's failure to form a coalition government following two rounds of national elections in April and September.
Netanyahu, a staunch Trump ally, has been in office for 10 years. But he faces a criminal corruption probe and the possibility of an indictment and prosecution.
