Swimmers on a quiet North Queensland island were sent into a panic when men armed with fake guns threatened to shoot them.

Two men with the 'gel blaster' rifles entered the pool area at Mandalay Avenue on Magnetic Island’s Nelly Bay at about 5.45pm on Saturday.

The toy guns look like real firearms but shoot gel balls similar to a paintball gun.
