The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez trailer: Mom killed son because ...

A new documentary series pulls apart the broken government system that allowed an eight-year-old in California to undergo prolonged abuse before he was killed in May 2013.

Mother Pearl Fernandez was sentenced to life in prison and her sadistic boyfriend Isauro Aguirre was sentenced to death in 2018 after they murdered Gabriel Fernandez because they thought he was gay.

The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez offers an inside look at court as well as an eye-opening investigation about how the Los Angeles County's Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) received multiple reports and warning signs before he passed away.

Gabriel was initially raised by his uncle Michael and his partner David but soon after he moved in with his mother his teacher reported injuries.

The little boy endured violence that Los Angeles Judge George G. Lomeli described as 'horrendous, inhumane and nothing short of evil'.

A trailer for the documentary begins with a warning from the courtroom guard: 'This is going to be very emotional, if at any point to find yourself overwhelmed, please step out, compose yourself and com back inside.'

During the trial, prosecutors told how Gabriel was forced to sleep blindfolded in a cabinet or handcuffed to a door and gagged. He was beaten with bats and shot with BB guns, leaving pellets lodged in his lung and groin. They also force fed him cat feces.

They tried to cover up their abuse and discussed putting him in ice baths over text messages.

Gabriel had cigarette markings on his body and they thought the baths would help disguise his bruises.

It took two days to do the autopsy which discovered Gabriel died from blunt force trauma compounded by neglect. As part of their case, prosecutors submitted drawings which illustrated the scale of the boy's injuries.

At the time of his death Gabriel's skull was fractured, his teeth had been knocked out and the inside of his throat was burned
