A gardener has been slapped with a hefty fine after unplugging a set of traffic lights to charge his phone.

Zeke Harley Butcher was seen 'pulling vigorously at the access door to the traffic light control box' on the corner of Channon and Duke Streets in Gympie, Queensland before 8pm on February 4.

The 28-year-old was then seen 'rummaging around' the traffic light control box when the traffic lights malfunctioned.
