Australia's car industry has been in recession for two years following the collapse of Holden, new figures show.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries has revealed the coronavirus was worsening an already bad situation.

The group's chief executive Tony Weber highlighted how monthly sales had been shrinking without fail since March 2018, after Holden made its last car in Australia.

'The Australian new vehicle market has now seen a downturn each month for the past 23 months,' he said.
