Channel Ten has come under fire for picking a fill-in host from The Project over its 'Princess of the Punt' to cover the Melbourne Cup.

Gorgi Coghlan will be taking on hosting duties, alongside Stephen Quartermain, for the big race at Flemington on Tuesday.

Former Perth-based sport presenter Tim Gossage has spoken out, questioning why the top job did not go to sports presenter Caty Price.

Price, nicknamed 'Princess of the Punt', who has extensive experience covering racing and has been hosting the network’s coverage in the lead up to the main event, will be taking on a reporting role instead.

Gossage called the decision 'befuddling'.
