A young mother killed in a freak boat accident that her two-year-old daughter miraculously survived has been remembered as a 'truly remarkable person' who overcame a tragic past.

Nicole Herbert, 21, died when the tinnie she was in struck a jetty at Chelmer, in Brisbane's south-west, on Wednesday afternoon.

Her heartbroken dad, Rodger Herbert, described the young mother as 'happy' and 'full of life' in an emotional tribute shared to The Courier-Mail.

Mr Herbert said his daughter overcame homelessness as a teenager before starting a family with her high school sweetheart.

'I have a wound that will never heal. She truly was a remarkable person,' he said.
