We've been urged to to make essential journeys only. But, as the second lockdown began yesterday, there was still rush-hour chaos across the country.

It was standing room only on some London Underground trains, and nationwide traffic congestion was more than three times worse than the first day of the March lockdown, according to TomTom data audited by the Daily Mail.

Although morning traffic was down compared with earlier in the week, motor groups expressed concern that car use has remained relatively high in many areas despite the new restrictions.
