The elderly mother of a man whose dead body was found inside his family home is under police guard in hospital as police probe with an axe was used as a weapon.

A 50-year-old man was found dead at a home in Palmyra Court, Greensborough in Melbourne's north-east on Monday about 11.30am.

His 81-year-old mother is currently under police guard in hospital where she is being treated for the injuries also sustained during the horrific incident. 

Homicide detectives are probing whether an axe was used in the attack.
