A Victorian Labor backbencher has been named under parliamentary privilege as the MP accused of having sex in his parliamentary office.

Liberal MP James Newbury used the legal immunity to identify Ringwood MP Dustin Halse as the state government politician at the centre of the allegation during a budget committee hearing on Monday.

'The Speaker's confirmed an investigation into the member for Ringwood bonking in his office,' Mr Newbury said, holding up a newspaper front page story on the issue from earlier this year.
